That book is almost standalone, aside from a few scenes dealing with the fallout of events in 'Tinker'. His first published novel, Call for the Dead (1961), introduced his 'anti-hero' George Smiley, who appears in most of his stories. My challenge then is to decide whether to start lsitening to The Honourable Schoolboy, or to finally read the paperback that has been on my TBR pile for three or four years? This picks up where Tinker Tailor ends - Smiley's uncovered the mole, but the Circus has been deeply compromised. I'm not quite sure why in both cases they would choose to skip over the second book, The Honourable Schoolboy, but perhaps it is because it takes place in Hong Kong. Smiley plays only a small role in the next book, the mostly South East-Asian set "The Honourable Schoolboy".
